Himmler's escort Begleit-Battalion Komandostab RF-SS was expanded in February 1943 into Sturmbrigade Reichsführer SS. In summer 1943 the unit was in Corsica. In October 1943 it was expanded in Slovenia and Austria into a division. In February 1944 the 35th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment and the Flak Abteilung were in battles in Anzio. In March 1944 the other units of the division were sent to Hungary. In May 1944 the division was reunited in Grosseto in Western Italy. They retreated while battling in August 1944 along the coastline through Livorno, Pisa and Carrara. In September 1944 they participated in anti-partisan operations and were extremely cruel.

In January 1945 the division retreated through Bologna and Forl to Hungary. In March 1945 they battled near Lake Balaton. The divisions spread out units surrendered to the British and the US troops in Klagenfurt and Radstadt.
